Silly Little Love Songs: Emily S.

She just has style. These are words I have used to describe Broadmoor resident, Emily S. Hailing from The Garden State, Emily has called New Orleans home for 5 years now. It didn’t take her long to realize she wasn’t going anywhere and then decided to put a ring on New Orleans by purchasing a home. She took her awesome style and turned her home from the previous owner’s bachelor pad to something made for a magazine. (Scroll to the bottom for photos!)

How did you end up in New Orleans?

I actually came here for one night when I was 20. I had a fake ID from a copy shop in North Philly and had blast….can I get arrested for saying that? Anyway, I felt that pull or sense of connection I think a lot of people feel and are not sure why. After I graduated from Grad school in Philly I decided to do it. I didn’t have a job and didn’t know anyone. It was in no way easy but ended up being the best experience of my life.

I decided to stay because of how much I was able to grow both personally and professionally. This city has provided me so many opportunities and I know how much of a privilege it is to be in a position to have them accessible to me. I am forever grateful to feel welcomed and at home in New Orleans. I don’t think I could live anywhere else.

Tell me why you love Broadmoor.

It’s a very diverse neighborhood. The Broadmoor Improvement Association is active in the community and it’s great. I actually rent space at the Broadmoor Wellness center and it allowed me to start my own business.

Was Broadmoor on your radar when we started searching for homes?

YES! It was more affordable than Mid-City, but I wasn’t ready to move to Gentilly. While it’s residential, I can get everywhere in 15 minutes. It’s accessible to everything.

Do you know your neighbors? Do you feel a sense of community?

People in this neighborhood are friendly and say hello. CoCo down the street reminds me to put my trash out every week. With the association being so active, the neighborhood is well taken care of.

Any advice to any looking to move to Broadmoor? Or why they should move here?

It’s peaceful – that’s the only way I can describe it. It’s quiet, comfortable, and I feel very safe here. It’s relaxing. There is a different type of architecture in this neighborhood than elsewhere and it’s beautiful.

What do you love about your house?

I lived in shotguns for so long so the open floor plan, for sure. I just love my living and dining space. This house just feels cozy.

Anything extra to add? Favorite restaurant or favorite thing about New Orleans?

El Pavo Real in Broadmoor is my favorite restaurant right now. I am actually heading there when you leave here. New Orleans is unlike any city in our country. People’s eyes light up when they come here and it feels good to have created a home for myself here.
