Suburbs of New Orleans

Suburbs of New Orleans

You love living in New Orleans. You love the food, the culture, and every single thing you can think of. But, you don’t want to be IN the city; you want to be a quick drive to it.

No problem! We’ve got you! The Be New Orleans team works all over the New Orleans metro area.

What are the suburbs of New Orleans?

Let’s take a look at all your area options!

Metairie

Metairie is part of the Eastbank portion of Jefferson Parish. It’s also the largest community in Jefferson parish. With lots of shopping, national chains, and many different housing sizes – it’s an excellent option for all people. They even have Mardi Gras parades in Metairie! This New Orleans suburb is trendy, so don’t be shocked if you get into a bidding war over a home.

Gretna

If you’re looking for a suburb with less traffic than Metairie, then Gretna could fit the bill. Known for fast police response time, a quaint downtown, and being minutes from the city, you’ll be pleased with your move to Gretna. Old Gretna offers homes that are similar to the old New Orleans styles. The rest of this New Orleans suburb has ranches, Tudors, traditional style, and homes built in the 50s & 60s. You might even find a new construction home or two!

Kenner

Kenner is the largest city in Jefferson parish and the 7th largest in the state. The Tchoupitoulas Indians initially inhabited it; it was the first land in the metro area that Europeans set foot on. It’s close to the airport, has some great neighborhoods, and has many fantastic food options with its growing Hispanic population!

Terrytown

Located on the Westbank, it’s a mix of retirees and families. Terrytown has a small-town feel where everyone knows their neighbors. Houses tend to be smaller and more affordable too. They have fabulous bakeries, multi-cultural shops, and Oakwood Mall!

Chalmette

Known as “da parish,” Chalmette is just past the Lower Ninth Ward and Arabi. You will find kids riding their bikes and your neighbors waving hello. Local restaurants serving up comfort food can be found all over Chalmette. While it’s not super walkable (a very residential place), nothing is more than 5 to 10 minutes from your door.

Arabi

When taking Claiborne down the Chalmette, you will drive through Arabi first. Arabi has homes that will remind you of New Orleans and solid new construction. Great restaurants, a new grocery store, and ease of getting back to the city make this suburb of New Orleans super desirable.

Harvey

Centrally located on the Westbank, you’ve got many chain restaurants and national retailers all around you. If you are looking for an older neighborhood with cute cottage homes or a gated community with newer construction – Harvey checks other boxes.

Belle Chasse

Belle Chasse is in Plaquemines Parish. While it will take you a little more time to get to the heart of New Orleans – people clamor to get in Belle Chasse for the schools. It’s also one of those communities where everyone knows everyone else. They’re gonna know your whole family too. With the Orange Festival, fresh produce from Becnel’s, and some of the best seafood in the state – you won’t be sad living in Belle Chasse.

Marrero

Affordable housing, a national park for your backyard, outdoor activities, and local restaurants make Marrero a place many love calling home. They have an annual crawfish boiling championship and a Cajun fest with a 5k. Marrero is broken up into mini subdivisions, with every kind to meet your needs.

Westwego

If you’ve heard of the lot that sells fresh seafood, it’s in Westwego. Personally, I call it Shrimp Town – but it’s known as the shrimp or seafood lot. Westwego can brag about having Bayou Segnette, which has a wave pool, canoeing, and hiking. Most of the homes tend to be raised cottages. Their residents love the small-town feel that Westwego provides. Don’t forget to try Mo’s Pizza!

Algiers & Algiers Point

These are not the suburbs of New Orleans, despite what many transplants think. These suburbs are part of New Orleans and Orleans Parish – and don’t you forget it!
