Everything is different the second time around.
The city did a number on the 7th Ward neighborhood years ago when it decided to build the I-10. This area has been slowly clawing its way back out since they tore down the old oak trees (which are painted on the concrete pilings holding up the interstate in remembrance) and destroyed the booming business district.
Let’s jump to the current day. The 7th ward is now such a mix of old and new – driving down one block, you can pass a beautiful renovation next to a blighted home. This area is changing rapidly, probably to the dismay of some and the joy of others. However, this New Orleans neighborhood still has Miss Pearl selling pralines from her porch, as you can’t kill tradition here.
Shotguns and cottages are the main architectural types dotting the landscape. Whether you’re looking for something old or new, the 7th Ward welcomes you to enjoy their slower pace of life.
Lagniappe: A.P. Tureaud was a prominent civil rights activist who today is honored in the 7th Ward with a park in his name.
