It’s hard to think of New Orleans without thinking of the Mississippi River. At the curve of the river, across from the French Quarter, you will find Algiers Point.
Algiers Point is New Orleans’ second oldest neighborhood. With that, it gives us a lot of history and plenty of charming, old houses. This area offers a mix of architectural styles – Greek Revival, Italianate and Creole Cottages, single and multi-family and Victorians. The Point in many ways feels like a throw-back neighborhood with kids riding their bikes down the streets, neighbors often feel more like family, and there is a very strong community presence.
But, don’t be fooled, this is not a cookie-cutter neighborhood. The people who make up Algiers Point are diverse – artists, musicians and professionals, and families who have been there for generations. There are several long-term businesses and, in recent years, there has been an influx of new businesses. Also, the neighborhood association is extremely active and always looking for community involvement.
The skyline view of New Orleans, from the Point’s levee, is not to be missed. And neither is the Algiers Courthouse! Speaking of what else not to miss – Cita Dennis Hubbell Library – from Author Night to Drag Story Time, this library is the heart of the neighborhood.
Long hailed as New Orleans best-kept neighborhood secret, it’s safe to say the secret is out. Maybe it’s time for you to Get to the Point.
