Times have changed and times are strange. Here I come, but I ain’t the same
New Orleans East is massive. When you think you have finally made it out of the city limits, you realize you’re still in the East.
Because of its size, this section of New Orleans is compromised of various mini neighborhoods. Some of the ones you may have heard of are Little Woods, Pines Village, and Village de L’Est.
The history of New Orleans East is that is was all once marshland. While there was once a sugar cane plantation and a refinery, the first neighborhood wasn’t developed until the 1950s.
While now having far fewer residents than before Hurricane Katrina, the ones who remain are determined to bring the East back to the thriving community it once was. The city of New Orleans has called for proposals for the old Six Flags theme park and they have an extremely active neighborhood advisory commission. This group helps keep their residents up to date on community projects and economic development.
Lagniappe: The Lakefront Airport is a stunning piece of Art Deco architecture. One of Amelia Earhart’s last flights landed at this airport.
