Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know, She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I’ll share her home

Hello, Faubourg Marigny! You will find her between the French Quarter and the Bywater; while she has commonalities with both, she is her own woman.  She epitomizes what Joie de Vivre New Orleans is known for. Due to that, it’s no surprise artists and artists at heart are drawn to her.

Take a stroll or bike ride through the Marigny, and you will delight in colorful creole cottages, ornamented shotguns, and several corner store homes. Common styles include Creole, Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Eastlake, and Arts & Crafts. The architecture is heavily influenced by colonial French and Spanish, with a splash of the Caribbean.

Note the lush greenery in the neighborhood, which lures you in and makes every day feel like a vacation.  The residents of this neighborhood are diverse – you’ll find many musicians, artists, dreamers, and families who have lived here for generations, as well as transplants that discovered Frenchmen Street and never looked back.

No matter what block you call home in this neighborhood, you are within walking distance of coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and live music. Washington Square Park is a favorite spot to meet up with friends, people-watch, or walk the dog. It also periodically hosts festivals, art markets, concerts, and more. The Marigny also hosts some of our most clever and fun walking parades!

Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and designated a National Historic District in 1978, the New Orleans Historic District Landmarks Commission (HDLC) has jurisdiction over the Marigny; you will want to be sure to follow the proper protocols before making any changes to the exterior of the property.

Lagniappe: Faubourg is an old French term for the suburb, and Marigny is the namesake of Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville (better known as Bernard de Marigny), the bon vivant who subdivided his plantation into the lots that form modern Faubourg Marigny back in 1806. The game of craps was brought to New Orleans by Bernard de Marigny.
