How to Lower Your Home Insurance Rates

How to lower your homeowner's insurance

An all too common question we get from our clients is “How can I lower my homeowner’s insurance?” As much as we love selling your real estate, we do not sell insurance. But, that’s ok!

Ways to Lower Your Home & Flood Insurance:

  • Do an inventory of your personal items to see if you’re overinsured
  • Get a monitored fire & burglar alarm installed
  • If your home is over 25 years old (which, in New Orleans, it likely is!) provide proof of updating the roof, plumbing, AC & furnace, and electrical
  • Install hurricane roof straps: metal plates that are used tot ie the roof to the wall studs
  • Install hurricane shutters or impact-resistant glass
  • Install deadbolts, fire extinguishers, and smoke alarms
  • Replace fuses with a circuit breaker panel. Replace circuit breaker panels made by Zinsco and Federal Pacific.
  • If you have a pool, remove the diving board and slide. Install a 6′ locked fence.
  • Do not AirBnB or VRBO. Claims can be denied.
  • Increase your credit score
  • Do not have a trampoline!
  • Get an elevation certificate if you’re not in an X, B, or C flood zone

If your home has been updated to the current building code, let your insurance agent know and be prepared to provide proof! As long as you can show receipts and photos, these upgrades will lower your yearly premium.

Chat with your insurance agent to make sure those items are covered if you have unique aspects to your home – like a rock climbing wall, a 16′ metal slide, or a skateboard ramp.
