Groovy Gert Town

New Orleans neighborhood, Gert Town, was named for a man with the last Gehrke who had bought a corner store at S. Carrollton & Colapissa. In typical New Orleans fashion, we continued to pronounce the name as we wanted and it eventually transformed into what we call it now.

While once pretty barren, Gert Town is now alive and seeing some great revitalization. Be on the lookout for the new, large, & modern apartment complex being built.

Here is a look into some of Gert Town’s businesses!

Propeller

Propeller was founded almost ten years ago as a nonprofit designed to operate as a small business incubator. Propeller is committed to providing resources to businesses seeking to make a difference in social and environmental issues within their communities. The organization strives to assist young entrepreneurs through several different programs, as well as providing co-working space to local businesses and nonprofits. Propeller has helped support the growth of many successful businesses in the area, including Circle Food Store, Sugar Roots Farm, and Magnolia Yoga Studio to name a few. This nonprofit has proven itself an essential component of the New Orleans entrepreneurial community today and continues to provide invaluable support to the New Orleans business community.

Crescent City Aerial Arts

Crescent City Aerial Arts is an aerial and circus arts studio located in the heart of Gert Town. The studio offers classes of all levels in aerial arts, providing a fun and unique way to get in shape. In aerial arts classes, you will learn how to safely maneuver while suspended in the air using rope and silks. The studio holds open gym twice a week, and offers private and semi-private lessons. Crescent City Aerial Arts is the home of the De La Lune Aerial and Cirque troupe, a professional circus arts troupe that performs at various public and private events throughout the city. And if you’re looking to get the family involved, the studio features a circus camp for kids every summer. This is a great way to get the kids involved in fun and creative summertime activities!

Rosenwald Recreation Center

The Rosenwald Recreation Center on South Broad reopened two years ago, after the original structure was torn down due to damage from Hurricane Katrina. Today, the center is a busy gym and community space for local residents. The gym features an indoor basketball court, a weight room, and an outdoor pool that is open for the summer. Rosenwald is a wonderful resource for kids and adults, offering several different fitness and swim classes, public mixed-use space, piano lessons, and after-school programs. And, the center is always in need of volunteers, so get up, get out, and get involved in the community!
