When you think of New Orleans, you may not always think of Mid-Century Modern homes. However, the city has a fair amount of them around town—in various neighborhoods, in different sizes, and at a variety of price points. The one exciting thing for mid-mod lovers is that you can find an affordable option in New Orleans or the metro area.
Mid-century modern homes were built from the 1940s to the 1970s. They aren’t a one-size-fits-all. They also have unique styles, and some are more traditional than one would think!
Mid-Century Touches
Many homes here are labeled as mid-century moderns when they may have touches of MCM instead. Most of us do not consider these true mid-mod homes; however, the Field Guide to Mid-Century House Styles says this isn’t so! While we may think of flat and low-sloped roof lines, some of these homes may look way more traditional than expected. The key seems to be searching for the elements inside the home instead!
The great news is that no matter what mid-century home you’ve opted for, there are many resources for obtaining items to bring your house back to its original glory—if it’s been tinkered with! Some of our favorites are Make It Mid-Century and Mid-Mod Midwest. If you’re looking to recreate those lovely, retro bathrooms, our personal favorite is Vintage Tile Shop.
Larger Mid-Century Homes in New Orleans
If you love Frank Llyod Wright, you should see what his former apprentice, Albert Ledner, has done in New Orleans. He designed the iconic ashtray house on Park Island.
Another pair of architects, Curtis & Davis, also designed many New Orleans homes, including the one the Saints call home every Sunday – the Superdome.
But if you’re looking for those larger mid-century modern homes in New Orleans, look in Lake Vista, Uptown, and Park Island. Not that you can’t find them elsewhere, but these are the most likely locations for square footage. The price tags will match the size!
