Easygoing East Carrollton

East Carrollton is such a mix of families, businesses, and temporary college kids that I’m never sure how to describe it fully to people. There are parts of the East Carrollton neighborhood that are so quiet, you would never know there are a couple of universities within spitting distance. Hanging around the Maple Street & Broadway area would remind you quickly, though. Two of the businesses we are featuring are along Maple Street- where I spent many a nights at TJ Quill’s in the early 2000s. The other one is an institution in this city.

Joe’s Cobbler Workbench

I’ve had many friends swear up and down on how good Joe is. They have been in business since sometimes in the 70s. Having a real mom & pop shop, that is still thriving, is something we can all admire. I stopped in to ask them a few questions about their business & Joe’s grandson was working the counter. He told me they were too busy to answer any questions as they have a ton of business right before Mardi Gras. I can respect that and went along my way. If you have any shoe repair needs, clearly there is a long standing trust with Joe’s and the public.

Sarah Ott New Orleans

Sarah Ott caught my eye as they had a shirt hanging out front that that said “NOLA made me do it.” Yeah, I know that all too well. Her studio is down a long hallway, next to Jamila’s Cafe. They have had this store open for a little over 2 years now. Sarah is a local girl who designs all the jewelry and shirts herself. She has a ton of great Mardi Gras shirts as we head into the season. Her skyline necklace is the most popular item in the store. I have seen them around town and always wondered where to track them down.

William’s Plum Street Snowballs

People in this city fight all the time about where their favorite snoball stand is. East Carrollton folks know that Plum Street has the best. They must be doing it right, since have been in business since 1945! They have tons of creative flavors and most people I know rave about their nectar cream. As a snoball purist, I feel, their cherry flavor cannot be beat. Be prepared to stand in line during the summer – but, it’s so worth the wait. Plum Street also caters parties year round!
