Our City, My Home: Carly S.

Carly may be newer to New Orleans, but her style and attitude work perfectly in The Big Easy. She found her abode in one of our absolute favorite neighborhoods and has curated a magazine-worthy space. Carly is the perfect keeper of the home – as I’m not sure of many who can do it justice the way she has. This should not surprise any of her avid followers since she is a designer, among other talents!

What neighborhood do you live in?

Lower Garden District

How long have you lived here?

A year and three months!

Why do you love your neighborhood?

I love the close proximity I am to some great coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and shopping. My neighborhood feels very cosmopolitan and local instead of suburban or touristy.

Was this the neighborhood you hoped for when looking for a new spot?

The location and layout of the house suit my lifestyle very well.

Are you from New Orleans? If not, tell us what brought you here!

I am a Cincinnati native but lived in Brooklyn for 12 years before relocating here six years ago. It was a social experiment. I wanted to see what would happen if I moved to a city where I knew no one and how I would navigate on my own. I will say that I am very happy with my progress.

Tell us your favorite thing about your house!

This house is stunning. My landlord cares very much for her property and has taken meticulous care of this home over the years. It’s a Craftsman style bungalow built in 1909 and I really love the amenities of this style of architecture. There are three tiled fireplace mantles, built-in bookcases, stained glass windows, an abundance of natural light throughout the space and so much storage space I could rent out some of my closets.

My front porch is also very unusual and rare down here. It has Middle Eastern Style Ogee Arches that form the structure. People often stop and take photos as they walk by.

Any upcoming home projects?

Project Garden Party: I am currently in the process of pimping out my backyard. There is so much potential and I’m just now getting around to really setting it up nicely so that I can host more.

Tell us some of your favorite things about New Orleans

I appreciate the beauty and romance that is New Orleans. I enjoy the leisurely pace of life as well as a better quality of life. I also love the summers down here, they are slow, sexy, and very much alive.
