We are about to say good-bye to 2018. New Orleans had some great places open, got their first female mayor, and still managed to get a few boil water advisories in. Not too shabby! While many “end of the year” lists in New Orleans are all about restaurants, we like to tell you about other things we fell in love with.
Here is a look at some of our favorite things from 2018!
Favorite City Council Member
Hands down – it has to be councilmember-at-large Helena Moreno.
Here is a glimpse of items that she spearheaded: holding Entergy accountable, establishing sexual harassment policies for city hall, creating procedures for the ITEP tax incentive, established DBE rules for city council contracts, working to secure funding in the city budget for a sobering center, and supporting the Children of Central City expose via event at Ashe Center, and subsequent resolutions for trauma informed practices in OBSB/private/parochial/charter schools.
Yeah, she’s pretty badass.
Favorite New Restaurant
Y’all. If you haven’t been to Gris-Gris yet in the Lower Garden District, you MUST go immediately. Get the gumbo, get the oyster appetizer, get the pork belly – just get it all. Don’t forget they were featured on 365 New Orleans. Check out that interview again!
Favorite New Bar
Whiskey & Sticks may be small, but they are packing them in! If you love whiskey and bourbons, you’re going to thoroughly enjoy this 7th Ward spot. Ken & Kelder opened up in August of this year and would love for you to stop in. Make sure to see their 365 New Orleans interview if you missed it!
Favorite Pet Business
Allison Ward, owner of Pet Krewe, wants your pets to be in the very best costumes! With lion manes, Sesame Street themed outfits, and a really cool app – you’re gonna LOVE all they have to offer. Be on the lookout for upcoming prizes from Pet Krewe on the @beneworleans Instagram.

Favorite Instagram Account
@thirtyninetyliving is just filled with beautiful photos from all over this fair city! Houses, streetcars, the Dome, food – all the things you want to see around the city are there. Instead of food-porn, it’s cityview-porn. Go give Chelsea a follow, you won’t be disappointed.
Favorite Local Non-Profit
Family Service of Greater New Orleans is just not as well-known as I would like it to be. They have been here for over 100 years helping troubled youth, single mothers, people with substance abuse problems, and more. Feel free to throw them a donation to kick start your good vibes in 2019.
Favorite “Only in New Orleans” moment
Y’all had a second line for a cat who blew an Entergy transformer.
Y’all. Had. A. Second. Line. For. A. Cat.
If that isn’t some New Orleans nonsense, I do not know what is.
Caroline Thomas makes the most delectable looking headpieces that you will find anywhere. From cake to popsicles, and everything in between, you will find yourself wanting to take a bite. Caroline makes non-food related pieces as well, but those cupcake fascinators are my jam! You can find her pieces at Fifi Mahoney’s, Miette, and the New Orleans Costume Center.
Here at Be New Orleans, we are pumped about what 2019 has in store. Our team has grown and we are almost halfway through our ambitious project called 365 New Orleans.
We also helped 69 different people find their new homes in New Orleans and the metro area. As we prep for the new year, we are looking forward to helping many more of you.
Happy New Year! May your 2019 only be filled with good juju!
