Broadmoor resident, Dana Beuhler, is running her business Mardi Gras Customs from her raised basement home, with a beautiful baby on her hip. Looking around her shop, you can see outlines of flower petals spray painted on the ground, splashes of paint everywhere, and headpieces in the making. Since Mardi Gras is a year round job, she’s toiling away on projects already. Not only does Dana make beautiful creations, but she likes to give back to community as much as she can too. You can find her assisting with Paint Fest for Tulane Hospital patients and caregivers, among other things.
1. What products and services do you offer?
I make Carnival style paper flowers, large scale sculpture fabrication, painting commissions, and costume design. I wear a lot of hats!
2. How long have you been in business?
Mardi Gras Customs has been around for 3 years. But, I have been an artist for Mardi Gras and film and television for 12 years.
3. How do people find you online?
4. What is lesser known about your business that you wish more people knew?
The sculpture fabrication. I get a lot of publicity for flowers and costume design, but I can actually make large scale sculptures.
Also, I do event rentals. I rent out the flowers for baby showers, weddings, and back drops.
5. What’s your favorite aspect or project you’ve worked on?
Whatever is being shipped out my studio in the moment in my favorite!
I made a 14 foot Buddha head sculpture for a tv show called Quarry a few years ago. It was so much fun to make.
I also costume design for Krewe des Fleurs, who walk in Cleopatra, Iris, and Mid-City. Since there are so many body shapes, and different skill levels of crafting, we have to get creative, and be mindful, with the costumes. I make a prototype and then host a workshop for the participants to come and learn who to make their costumes. Some people are very skilled at crafting and other aren’t. It’s a balance so people don’t get scared, but can also learn something new!
