“I think we lost her to New Orleans” is what Jeanine Nahra‘s dad said after she was living here for 4 years. Jeanine was introduced to scratchboard in high school with no direction on how it worked. She self-taught on that medium, but obtained her college degree in art. After finishing college, she moved down to New Orleans in 1980 from Iowa, only two weeks before Mardi Gras. She knew nothing about the city beforehand, she was just looking for a place to move to. Jeanine fell in love with the culture, the atmosphere, and the artists. She knew she belonged.
Jeanine has a soft spot for animals and you will notice them in a lot of her artwork. She makes everything look so realistic!
1. What products and services do you offer?
All scratchboard, original art. I also make prints and reproductions of the work. I reproduce them on functional items like coasters, mousepads, etc. I also reproduce the work in decorative items, like crystals that can be used as paperweights.
2. How long have you been in business?
Over 40 years now!
3. How do people find you online?
4. What is lesser known about your business that you wish more people knew?
People think it’s a hobby, and it’s not. I do this to make a living.
Also, because of the medium I use most of the time, people think I can’t do anything else. I also work with oils, water colors, etc.
5. What’s your favorite aspect or project you’ve worked on?
My favorite piece was one I did of Bom Bom, the male gorilla at the Audubon Zoo.
My favorite aspect is that we get to travel and go to places we wouldn’t have otherwise. We meet lots of people who have become good friends.
